Harley Weyer, short
biography.
I was
with the USAF from 1959 to 1963, stationed 1 year in Bremerhaven and 2
years in Zweibrücken. After finishing my engineering degree at Iowa State
University, I went to work for NASA in Houston in 1967. From '67 to '72 I
worked in the Mission Control Center during the Apollo project. The
highlight of my career was seated at a console when Neal Armstrong stepped
on the moon. I was 29.
In 1972 I
transferred to aircraft operations. My first duty and for 23 after was to
fly in the back seat of the WB57F high altitude research aircraft. I
also spent 5 years flying as an engineer on the Shuttle training aircraft
doing flight testing and some astronaut training flights. The letter
covers came from our time training at the White Sands Missile range in New
Mexico.
In 1995 I
took an early retirement at age 55 to return with my wife to our home in
Iowa where we have a small farm. I play with my Belgian draft horses
and work in my wood working shop while my wife operates a small store in
Perry selling women's clothing.

Roundup, 20. Juli 1973
Two J(ohnson)S(pace)C(enter)
employees Axel Larsen (FC4) and Harley Weyer (FC2) recently
prevented a man from drowning in Galveston Bay near Seabrook.
Larsen and Weyer said
they were returning from an evening of sailing Sunday, July 8 when
they heard cries for help. They sailed in the direction of the cries
for help. They sailed in the direction of the cries with a
flashlight and were able to distinguish a man's head bobbing in the
waves and currents.
When efforts to get a
life pre- |
server to the man —
Dale Taylor — failed, Larsen swam to him and kept him afloat while
Weyer manuvered his sailboat around to pick them up.
While a rescue squad
and local peace officers assisted Taylor on the ground, Larsen and Weyer
sailed out in search of an other man who had accompanied Taylor in
an attempt to swim across the channel.
It was later learned
that the man was rescued from shore. |
